New York a pot of opioids: A doctor arrested for distributing opioids worth millions

The selfish greed of people overcomes them to such an extent that they do not mind making hundreds of the victims. A new case of illegal opioid dealings was disclosed in the heart of the USA. In New York, malpractice of a doctor in distributing opioids was revealed to have operated for more than ten years. Ruvin Krupkin is the doctor who was arrested for distributing strong opioid drugs to patients without any medical necessity. He prescribed them just to get cash in return from the vulnerable addicts of opioids.

Geoffrey S. Burman, a US-based attorney from Manhattan issued a statement regarding the case. He was informed that amidst the grave situation of the USA concerning the widespread increase of opioid abuse, Krupkin offered addictive opioids to his patients for mere sums of cash. He continued this for more than ten years even though he knew how drastic the results of opioid addictions are. Oxycodone was the main drug that he prescribed to patients in exchange for two hundred dollars cash for every prescription. Burman assured that the culprit would understand the gravity of his crimes after his arrest.

William F. Sweeney also expressed his frustration because of the crime. He was the Assistant Director of the FBI. He said that while whole communities were battling the difficult fight of opioid addiction, by searching for an easier end to opioid addictions, Krupkin was involved in easily prescribing opioids to addicts. He warned that the ones who are licensed to prescribe such strong drugs have the duty to make sure that they do not misuse their rights. He warned that those who went against the integrity of their profession by misusing their right would be questioned.

Commissioner of the New York Police Department, James P. O’Neill also expressed his sentiments regarding the case. He also warned how the culprit had gone against the principles of his profession and fueled the fire of opioid addiction in the society, all for his own selfish gains. He expressed gratitude for the works of all those involved in the investigation of the case. He also warned that whoever gets involved in such drug crimes, from doctors to small level schemers, his office, and other security forces would make sure to bring the criminals to justice.

According to reports, almost four million oxycodone pills were prescribed by Krupkin to patients without any medical reasons to do so. He was said to have gained almost three million and eight hundred thousand dollars from all the transactions. All these transactions were made in cash.

Krupkin was a hematology and oncology specialist. He operated his consultations through a clinic on Coney Island. He looked after some patients who had sickle cell anemia. It is an illness that can cause pain to the patients. For this, patients are given oxycodone to deal with the pain. But there were many patients to whom he prescribed oxycodone even though he knew that they did not actually need it. Additionally, he did not even examine the patients properly before prescribing the drug. Even the prescriptions’ details were almost the same in many patients in every visit.

Further evidence showed that Krupkin gave high dosages of oxycodone to patients. Such high dosages of the drug can be very dangerous and addictive.  He gave around one hundred and eight 80 milligrams pills. He continued this till 2010. After this, the composition of the drug changed. Then the value of the drug declined. Then, he started increasing the dosages. He started giving one hundred and eight or two hundred and forty 30 milligrams pills. In fact, many of the patients that received the drugs would often route these drugs to dealers. Krupkin was even aware of such activities of the patients, but he continued with his malpractice.

Krupkin’s activities of distributing drugs illegally may end up in twenty years of incarceration. The actual verdict is yet to be announced by the court.

The FBI-NYPD Health Care Fraud Task Force was commended for its work in the inspection of the case.  The New York City Human Resources Administration also worked hard for the investigation. The Office’s Narcotics Unit managed the case. Assistant United States Attorneys Tara M. La Morte and Alexandra Rothman were prosecuting the case.
